Town of Brookline Seeks Candidate for Board of Library Trustees

The Brookline Board of Library Trustees and the Select Board wish to announce that they are seeking candidates to fill a vacancy on the Board of Library Trustees following the resignation of Regina Healy.

Pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter, 41, section 11, the Library Trustees and the Select Board will work jointly to find a person to fill the vacancy until the annual town election in May 2023.

Those interested should submit a cover letter and resume by June 10 to the Board of Library Trustees at librarytrustees@brooklinema.gov, or by regular mail at 361 Washington St., Brookline, MA 02445. Candidates must be registered voters of the Town of Brookline.

The Library Trustees will interview the candidates during the weeks of June 13 and June 20. All interviews will be held remotely.

The Select Board and Library Trustees will conduct final interviews at a Joint Convention on June 28 and will fill the vacancy at that time. The Joint Convention will be held via Zoom and the link will be posted on the Town Calendar.

The Board of Trustees consists of 12 local residents who are elected to three-year terms. Trustees work closely with the Director of the Library, and provide oversight of the library budget, services, and policies.

For more information on the responsibilities of a Library Trustee, please visit the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners’ website here.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Relations, in partnership with the Brookline Village Library, has reached out to a number of community members living in Brookline to gather items that represent AAPI heritage, and is excited to share them with you through the AAPI Heritage Month Exhibit, now on view at the Brookline Village Library until June 30, 2022. We invite you to come and see this exhibit in the first floor display cases (left entrance and lobby), and to read the poignant and powerful essays by the student winners of the BAAFN Asian American Student Essay Contest. We welcome all of you to learn about, better understand, and show your support for the AAPI community.

Art by Kitt & Mia

About the artists

Kitt: I am in 9th grade At Brookline High School, and I love making art!
Some of these projects were for my current freshman year art elective class .
The first piece with two bears is a color pencil drawing which took about two weeks to complete. The focus was on perspective and realism.
The second artwork is a print of my initials KB in different fonts, and was printed twice (in navy blue, and rotated in white ink).
The third work is an abstract portrait painting. I closed my eyes and drew myself with one line.then i printed it three times, and painted it in related color, and complementary colors in the overlaps.
The last piece is a watercolor portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. I outlined different shadows and went over it with black and white.
Mia: I am a 12 year-old girl who goes to Baker School, and is inspired by important causes and people. For example, I created the picture of Harriet Tubman because I am really motivated by her, and how she persevered no matter what.
Another example is my mosaic which represents the trash in the ocean , and how it hurts animals.I specifically included a turtle because, before Covid-19 started, I went to jekyll Island and saw baby sea turtles hatch and crawl to the ocean. Since then, I have been doing research on how to help turtles, as they are hurt by humans in so many ways.
I love art so much because it gives me a way to show I am, and what I think about certain things, through a different perspective.

Be sure to talk to our Special Collections team if you are interested in exploring our golf collections. And as always, our local newspaper collection is a reliable resource and scanned up to 1960, with plans for more decades added in future.  You may also wish to visit the USGA Museum and Library for in-depth golf research needs.

Portraits and Voices of the African American Golf Experience

The African American golf experience underwent dramatic changes during the decades before and after the Civil Rights era. During the significant period of social change, men and women played golf on courses across the country in leagues and tournaments that were open to all competitors. Included in this exhibit, A Passion for the Game, are images and personal reflections of players that provide a perspective of their experiences. For the pioneers of the African American golf experience, it was their passion for the game that compelled them to play with courage and dignity despite adversity.

The portraits contained in this exhibit were chosen to highlight the African American golf experience by featuring the work of esteemed photographer Michael Faye. Faye has a unique ability to capture the passion, intensity and personality of the players through refined black-and-white portraits, with a stark minimalistic touch that reflects the tone of the subject matter. Faye’s photographs were featured and published in a limited-edition book, PAR (2010), which was conceived by Dan Levinson and Robert Fernandez. James Black is featured in this portrait. A Passion for the Game is on view in The Gallery in Hunneman Hall, second floor, through June 30.
